Alain O Tool reflects on Cedar Park Heritage event

Last Saturday Cedar Park celebrated our fourth annual Heritage Festival at Elizabeth Milburn Park on Cypress Creek. The Heritage Festival was well-attended by hundreds of Cedar Park residents and their guests. Visitors played with animals in the petting zoo, toured a Cedar Park Fire Department fire engine, learned about traffic safety from Cedar Park police officers, purchased items from the craft fair, cheered at the junior “rodeo” emceed by Councilman Tony Dale, enjoyed some great live music & kettle corn, learned about Cedar Park history, and met a ton of new Cedar Park friends. Tourism Board member Mike McCloskey donned his finest cowboy hat for hosting a Census table in the Heritage tent. Aimee Whitley-George from the Chamber of Commerce hosted the Heritage tent and worked to preserve the stories of Cedar Park in an audio/visual story recording center. Tourism Board member Chuck Hamsa dressed the part to share living history with the young and young-at-heart through his stories and exhibits outside the Heritage tent. “The Festival had a comfortable and small-town feel,” said Angie Leboda, Cedar Park resident and mother of three. “The kids loved the kettle corn and learning how to lasso from real cowboys!”

Jason and Katie Barnett brought their kids to the afternoon parade that travelled Discovery and Quest Blvd. in Cedar Park, passing the library and the police department. “The Cedar Park Heritage Festival Parade was a lot of fun. Our family had the opportunity to spend some quality time together while watching all the fun floats and groups in the parade. We look forward to upcoming Cedar Park events like this!” the Barnetts said. Their children had their specific favorites in the parade: “The Chick-fil-a cows were really cool!” commented Seth Brennan, age 9, but his little sister Avery Barnett, age 4, preferred horse to cows: “The mini horses, and the little cheerleaders that were in the parade were really cute.”

At the heart of the festival was the Heritage tent, showcasing the foundation of Cedar Park through scrapbooks, exhibits, antiques, and of course; stories. *One Cedar Park woman, a resident for 80 years, included recipes from her former Cedar Park restaurant in a cookbook benefitting the Historical Society. Her restaurant, “Pass the Biscuits” was located at 183 and Buttercup. She remarked on how important it was to her to be able to share the story of Cedar Park with new residents and visitors. “I have seen so many changes”, she said, “and I’ll be here to see many more!”

The festival was a great opportunity for neighbors to come together for an exciting day of fun activities, to learn more about their community and to spend time with family. Classic cool spring hill country weather ensured a long day of festival fun, and the evening was capped off with a relaxing family-friendly picnic style movie in the park; on the big screen!
